Dell Inspiron Mini 1011 10.1-Inch Obsidian Black Netbook – Up to 8 Hours 8 Minutes of Battery Life (Windows 7 Starter) Reviews

Review by DDT:

I have had my Dell mini 10v for 3 weeks now. I have downloaded the necessary programs off the internet, open office and Firefox, and loaded my music and pictures using my external hard drive, so I have not needed an external DVD drive. I am very happy with the keyboard (it is much nicer than the Acer I tried). It is an adequate size and I quickly became accustomed to using it. All of the buttons are in the right places and I am able to type almost as well as I can on my 15 inch laptop. The touch-pad is different than most of the netbooks out there but that is part of what attracted me to the Dell. I read many reviews that questioned the touch-pad but when I tried all the different brands(Acer, HP, Asus) in person I found that it was one of the biggest and that I didn’t mind the integrated buttons and liked it better than the hp option of putting the buttons on the sides. Sometimes it does think I am trying to scroll when I click but I very rarely want to scroll so I will likely turn the scroll function off. So far the battery life of the 6 cell battery has been adequate. When running on battery with the screen turned all the way down I am getting about 6.5 hours which is less than advertised but is more than enough for me. I also like the power adapter. It is one piece and is able to plug into a surge protector and only takes up one spot which is nice. The only real negative right now is that it gets hot, hotter than my laptop and that upgrading the ram is not a task that I will be able to do on my own because I do not feel comfortable taking apart the entire computer and there is no access panel. Windows 7 starter is working well so far and I am planning on upgrading eventually. Overall I would purchase this netbook again but I do recommend that you go to a few stores and try all of the brands to determine if the keyboard and touch-pad are right for you.

Dell Inspiron Mini 10 10.1-Inch Obsidian Black Netbook with Integrated TV Tuner – Up to 6 Hours 20 Minutes of Battery Life (Windows 7 Starter) Reviews

Review by Westley:

Note: I use computers for my work but don’t pay much attention to details about them. I’m sometimes willfully ignorant of the details of my work computers, so this review (for better or worse) will not be a super technical one focusing on specifications and related details. I wanted a simple computer to use outside of work, and that’s what I got here. I received this Dell Netbook a few days ago and wanted to share my initial impressions of it.

I do a great deal of writing for my job and need to have frequent email access. I have a Dell Notebook but find that it’s a bit of a hassle hauling it around anywhere, so it ends up staying at home most of the time. When I saw this Dell’s Netbook on sale, I thought it might be ideal for my needs. In particular, I wanted something very lightweight that would allow me to access the web, answer email, access PDF documents, and edit documents. This Dell does all that and much more.

My job buys all my computers (the last computer I purchased myself was a Commodore 64 when I was a kid!), so I was a bit nervous purchasing it. I checked out reviews here and elsewhere and they seemed to indicate that the Dell Netbook would work well for my needs. However, I was concerned by some accounts of netbooks being slower than laptops and having many of other deficits. Fortunately, my concerns were unfounded (it isn`t slow and I have low needs for extensive computer memory anyway). I’ve never had to unpack a computer before (the IT people at my job have that honor), but it couldn’t have been easier. I was literally using my new Netbook within minutes. Everything was preloaded and ready for use.

I was hoping that it would come with Microsoft Word, but it instead includes Microsoft Works Word Processor, which I`d never used before. When I tried to open a Word document from my email, I was prompted to download Word Viewer. The two programs are compatible, but it is a bit of a hassle converting documents back and forth. Otherwise, I’m extremely pleased with my purchase. The Netbook is not slow in accessing the net even with numerous programs open at the same time. It is super lightweight — not much bigger or heavier than a large hardback book. The battery in the back does stick out a bit, although that actually helps make it more stable on a flat surface. Even straight out of the box, the battery lasted well over 5 hours. Other features include a webcam, adobe, media player, explorer — all the standard items you’d expect. As I mentioned, I don’t pay much attention to computer specifications and whether it has this feature or not. I simply don’t use my computers for anything too complicated. However, for what I need, this Dell Netbook more than exceeds my expectations. The Netbook’s portability make it ideal for carrying it around and travel. I think it would also be a great starter computer for kids and teens.

Dell Inspiron Mini 10V Netbook Computer (Intel Atom N270 160GB/1GB) Reviews

Review by triple M:

i got this netbook a few months ago, and its still works great!

the keyboard is really easy to use, after all, its 92% of the size of a standard keyboard! the fonts on the screen monitor are also easy to read and view, as compared to my mothers netbook, where the words are super tiny.

the web camera isn’t great, its only 1.3 megapixels and it has a low resolution.

i’d say that the number one thing missing on this phone is a microphone, but you can purchase that for like on amazon.

I would say this netbook is good for kids, teenagers, and students, simply because it has what you need with none of the bloated features that only business men would use. For example, i am a student, and this laptop fulfills all my needs such as ms works, fast internet, and some memory set aside for downloading apps such as itunes. speaking of which, the dell dock is a nice feature that this netbook offers.

now for the down side;

the speakers are a bit icky, it has a muffled sound and you cant hear it unless your in a quiet room, but sounds fine with headphones.

Its windows XP instead of windows 7, which i really wish it had!

there is no disc drive, i had to buy an external one off amazon for 20 dollars so i could connect it with my printer. \

when i got this, netbooks everywhere only had wifi, but now there are netbooks that have 3G as well, which is something to consider before buying this.

there is no live streaming TV, which alot of netbooks now also offer.

lastly, there is only 1 gigabyte of RAM, where as other netbooks have 2 gigabytes.

what i love about this netbook the most is that its durable. its not flimsy like other netbooks.

but if your looking for an easy to use, low budget netbook that has all of the necessities of a college student and younger, then this is the netbook for you!

Review by NJ Traveler:

Very nice computer but I want to share a couple of specifics that others have questioned.

1. This comes with a 6 cell battery so it sticks out on the bottom in back. Very good battery life- about 7 hours yesterday.

2. Windows 7 is the 64-bit version.

3. There is 4 GB Ram.

Much faster than my Dell mini 9 and only slightly larger. So far, I love it.

Dell Inspiron Mini IM10-2863 10.1-Inch Obsidian Black Netbook Reviews

Review by D. Farley:

So far I’m very impressed with this system. The keyboard is just awesome for a netbook, and with Windows XP Home, it’s really not all that slow. I’ve had several heavier applications open at the same time and didn’t really have any problems. Aptana Studio (My web development IDE of choice), FireFox 3, TrueCrypt, XAMPP (Apache & MYSql) just to name a few. I’ve only got a few real complaints about this computer. One, the touchpad is horrible. It really shouldn’t have had the two buttons integrated into the bottom of it, it’s not possible to have your index finger navigating and thumb clicking at the same time. It’s quite annoying (I bought a cheap travel mouse). The other complaint I have is the video playback quality. It’s really just not that good. It’s actually quite choppy for the most part if you try watching videos in fullscreen. I have however found a workaround for this, and it makes the video quality look awesome (see notes at the bottom).

Pros:

Awesome 10″ display

Great almost full-size keyboard

3 USB ports (one of the left, two on the right)

2.6lbs, it’s super light

Decent speed for a 1.3Ghz system.

Cons:

Cruddy video playback (mostly full screen problems)

Horrible Linux video driver support (Intel GMA 500, google it)

Battery life is a little bit lacking compared to other netbooks.

Touchpad needs to be redesigned.

Video Playback Notes/Quality tweak:

As far as the cruddy video playback is concerned, the one thing that I have found to help with this is the usage of a third party media player. A friend of mine turned me on to a player called KMPlayer [...] which comes bundled with just about every video codec ever made, and not to mention that it’s portable (it runs off of a thumb drive). Anyway, you can customize the video rendering to allow for a much smoother playback of videos even on this slower model. Here’s what I do:

Right-Click in the main KMPlayer window

Click on “Video (Advanced)”

Click “Video Renderer” up near the top.

Down near the bottom select “Enhanced Video Renderer”.

Be amazed at how much better your videos look.

The playback quality that I received from doing this rivaled my full-size desktop with a real graphics card in it. This is definitely the most redeeming quality about this netbook because it really unlocks the ability for this to be a good portable media player. Cheers.

Dell Inspiron Mini IM10-USE010AM Obsidian Laptop with Integrated TV Tuner – Black Reviews

Review by Always Samsung:

Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R7TZ4E87OUMM0 I just purchased my Dell Mini 10 (Blue Cover) and I have to say that this was one of the best investments I ever made. If you think you are getting a high end laptop for the price of three-hundred bucks, then you are sorely mistaken. This is basically a smart phone PDA increased to the size of a ten inch screen with a keyboard attached. Most of the bells & whistles are intact.

At first it took me some time to get use to the screen. Websites are slightly altered due to the 10 inch screen, so and with the tool bar on top that includes (File, Refresh, etc) it can seem like there’s hardly any room to view webpage’s, but you’ll get use to it. Viewing any site that you would on a regular desktop will have certain parts of the page moved around when viewing it on your netbook & this is to be expected because of the size.

I know everyone is complaining about the keypad, but it’s really not that bad. It does take a few tries before you realized what works best for you. I’ve learned from having a Dell Studio Laptop that the best thing to do is just utilize the free space as a mouse and click. Don’t bother trying to hit down on the key, but just double tap on the keypad to pick a selection. If you don’t, you will find the experience of navigating through websites, clicking on hyperlinks, typing a document on word, etc to be a horrendous experience.

I seriously do not understand the negative reviews & i dont understand why everyone is having so many technical issues. I am having none at all and i had Microsoft Word installed by myself when i got the netbook, so i just don’t get it!

Otherwise, if you are looking for a great small compact netbook to stay connected to the web, check email, browse a few sites – then this is the netbook for you. There isn’t much customization due to the small size of the netbook that feels very light just a little under three pounds and practically smaller and skinnier then the new Twilight book. I would have it ordered it on amazon, but it was cheaper through Dell.

Overall, I am very pleased with my purchase because it’s a great investment for anyone who needs internet access on the go. The only complaint I have is the price. I know its three-hundred, but I own a regular laptop with a 15 inch screen & that HP was only three-hundred. Sure, it was not a high end groundbreaking laptop, but it does the trick & power wise, it’s stronger than the mini. I really feel the price point should drop by hundred bucks. Otherwise, this is still a great PC tool to have.

Pros:

Light weight (Less then three pounds)

Customizable Cover with different colors

Windows XP (Thank GOD – Vista is so WHACK)

Keyboard is 90% size of a real keyboard

Wi-Fi

3 USB slots

160GB Memory

1.66 GHZ

1GB RAM

Cons:

A bit pricey IMO – It really should be two hundred & under

No DVD Slot

mCover® Clear Hard Shell Cover Case for Dell Mini 10 / 10v Netbook Reviews

Review by Tony Caballero:

The MCover hard shell is a essential piece for the Dell Mini 10. Sturdy and clean, it doesn’t provide so much additional strength as it does protection from fingerprints and scratches.

Using the clear shell also allows for placing artwork or stickers if desired without actually having to adhere them to your netbook’s chassis. I’ve done this with my Macbook as well, and it makes it easy to swap out designs when you get bored with them. Simply pop off the shell, place new ones on with a piece of double-sided tape, and snap back in place. Your netbook and artwork are protected.

And the shell helps prevents scratches that could occur from your netbook shifting around in your briefcase of backpack and doesn’t any noticeable amount of weight.

A great accessory for everyone looking to keep your Mini 10 looking fresh and new! And iPearl gives great prompt customer service too!!

Dell Inspiron Mini IM12-2870 12.1-Inch Red Netbook Reviews

Review by J. Lee:

PROS: big, vivid screen; nearly full-sized keyboard AND trackpad; very slim and light despite the 12.1″ screen; works great with XP

CONS: glossy case is print-prone; some shrunken buttons on keyboard; 3-cell battery life is low, need the 6-cell; RAM not upgradeable

—————-

Are you looking for a light, slim laptop that mimics the Macbook Air at a fraction of the price? Then the Dell Mini 12 would be a great choice for you!

I wanted the readable/usable screen size of 12.1 (10 might be the sweet spot for some people, but not for me — see for yourself firsthand) with a good keyboard, large trackpad, and light weight. Another important consideration was battery life of at least 5+ hrs (more on that later).

The Dell Mini 12 hits all of those points. The 12.1″ screen causes some debate about its classification as a “netbook,” but its Atom processor and low price definitely puts it in netbook territory. The screen is lovely, with true colors, no blotches or dead pixels, and decent viewing angles. The Atom processor (mine is 1.6 GHZ) is more than capable for basic web surfing, light typing, and reading PDFs in a Windows XP environment. And the price (I got it for under 0 at the brand name’s Outlet store) is superb, if you shop around.

The one featured on Amazon is decent, though it has the slightly slower chip; however, most online reviews downplay the effect of this clock speed decrease. Realize that it has 1GB of RAM, which is suitable for basic netbook applications on XP. But no expandability exists with this current setup — that may be a downer for those looking to soup up their netbook into performance ranges of a normal laptop or desktop.

Another knock against the Amazon one — it comes with only the 3-cell battery. That’s good for 2-3 hrs with some serious power conservation (Bluetooth off, screen brightness at maximum low), but the 6-cell gives you 5-6hrs easy. It adds a little bulk to the rear end, but this baby’s back is still appealing and makes it easier to hold, if you know what I mean…

Another unexpected but appealing feature to the Dell Mini 12: it is completely fanless. Somehow it manages to stay cool to the touch! Over time, I have found the silence and relative coolness to be big pluses.

In the end, the key thing for me is usability. I found the 12.1″ screen to be kind to my eyes and the trackpad/keyboard combo to be virtually normal-sized. The engineers at Dell were still able to package the Mini 12 into a ridiculously slim, light case. The closest competitor here would be the Samsung NC20, which is chunkier, louder, warmer, and more expensive, albeit with a much bigger hard drive and RAM expandability. For my purposes, the Dell Mini 12 is perfect. It just might be the same for you.

Dell Inspiron Mini IM10-2864 10.1-Inch Red Netbook Reviews

Cheers.
