Dell Inspiron 1545 15.6-Inch Jet Black Laptop – Up to 4 Hours 34 Minutes of Battery Life (Windows 7 Home Premium) Reviews

Review by Andrea L. Polk:

I’ve owned several laptops and would be considered an intermediate to advanced computer user. I’ve built my own desktops, tweaked a few laptops and owned various brands of laptops including HP, Fujitsu, Sony and Dell (Inspiron, Latitude and XPS series).

I purchased this laptop directly from Dell based upon Consumer Report’s November 2009 article recommendations where the Dell Inspiron 1545 was rated a ‘Best Buy’ for every day computing. I purchased it for my husband who will use it primarily for watching an occasional movie from Netflix streaming wirelessly on our home network, emailing to share jokes and videos with his friends, and browsing the Internet.

After setting it up, which other than running into a snag with my home network was a breeze, and playing with it for about an hour, these are my impressions.

The PROS:

+ Comes with Windows 7 – no need to upgrade, and the 64-bit combined with the more than adequate memory makes things move nicely. Slightly different than Vista’s look, but should be easy to use.

+ Adequate hard drive (mine came with a 320) for storing photos, videos and music.

+ Great 1.3mp webcam which delivers pretty nice snapshots (not too grainy) as well as excellent video (very little drag of movement).

+ Good speakers! Better than those on my Dell XPS, for which I paid 30% more less than a year ago.

+ 3 usb ports

+ Bright 15.6″ display; nice size. I sometimes find the 13″ on the XPS too small and the Fujitsu had a 17″ which is fine for a desktop replacement but really adds weight to the overall unit.

+ Virtually silent running. No fan noise to speak of and yet…

+ Stays cool to the touch! Not worried about overheating on this one.

The CONS:

- Keyboard is OK, but not as responsive as some others I’ve used.

- The touchpad seems a tad small and the buttons (left/right click) seem too low by comparison to the keyboard. It could be the size of my hands (small…) but I tend to think it’s just the layout.

- The high gloss finish inside and the glossy display (versus matte finish) look cool, but do show fingerprints and reflect light to the point of sometimes being a nuisance.

- There is no ‘media only’ button like on the XPS where you don’t have to turn on the computer to watch a movie, but this is something that higher end laptops would have and may simply be a perk to paying more.

- Heavier than some others, but at under six pounds, it’s still not too bad.

- Matte finish on the outside shows greasy smudges where you’ve touched it. I have the same issue with my XPS, but frankly I’ve never found a finish that doesn’t show something.

- Not a multi-media or gaming powerhouse. It will play dvd’s and games, but if you’re buying a laptop and really into those things, spend a bit more and make sure you upgrade your video and audio to support your interests. The 4GB of memory really helps as much as anything and I didn’t notice any issues with the media I tested.

SET-UP:

The only issue I had with setting up this laptop was with my home network not being accepted because Windows 7 didn’t like the security settings I had in place. I could get the 1545 to recognize my network, but it wouldn’t connect until I changed the settings. I had my wireless settings on WEP and Windows 7 wanted WPA. Once I changed the settings, the laptop connected. I then had to go to 8 different devices on my network and make sure they were happy. Only one item: Myine Electronics IR001 WiFi Internet Radio Adaptor wasn’t happy, but eventually accepted the settings with some concentrated tweaking.

BATTERY LIFE:

Battery life seems to be about 3.5 hours. I think the 4+ hour estimate is high, but that undoubtedly is also based upon what things you are doing on the laptop and mobile power settings.

CONCLUSION:

If you purchase this Dell you are getting a solid workhorse for every day computing for a fair price. I think it’s quality is certainly higher than an Acer with the same specs, and backed by a 1 year warranty from Dell. (Having had a Dell laptop that needed the keyboard replaced recently, I truly think the warranty service provided by Dell – they came to my house the next day – is exceptional and worth the small price hike over some other brands.)

The Dell Inspiron 1545 is perfect for a student, a grandma who likes to email or wants to keep up with the grandkids on Skype, or anyone who has no need for the latest and greatest gaming, multi-media computer. For a laptop with a webcam, 4GB memory, and Windows 7 (64-bit) that’s ready to fly right out of the box… it’s a good choice.

**WIRELESS NOTE: If you are having trouble connecting to a wireless network, be sure you check the included ’set-up guide’, page 10, to find the wireless key on your keyboard. You can inadvertently press this key and turn off your wireless capabilities. Handy on airplanes… not so handy at home.

Dell Inspiron 11 11.6-Inch Obsidian Black Laptop (Windows 7 Premium) Reviews

Review by NJ Traveler:

Very nice computer but I want to share a couple of specifics that others have questioned.

1. This comes with a 6 cell battery so it sticks out on the bottom in back. Very good battery life- about 7 hours yesterday.

2. Windows 7 is the 64-bit version.

3. There is 4 GB Ram.

Much faster than my Dell mini 9 and only slightly larger. So far, I love it.

Dell Inspiron 1470 14-Inch Cherry Red Laptop Up to 5 Hours 29 Minutes of Battery Life (Windows 7 Home Premium) Reviews

Review by John F. Cassidy:

So I was concerned that the ULV (Ultra Low Voltage) processor would not have enough “umph” but I was wrong. This is a nicely assembled machine and I even like Windows 7 (mostly). Background – I’ve worked in tech for 24+ years in a lot of different ways, but everyone who knows me says I’m a gadget freak. I’ve got all the toys – PNAV devices, iPods, iPhones, PCs, Macs, wireless networks – you name it. I’ve got the TV hooked to a cable box, iMac, and AppleTV and love them all. I’m typing this on my favorite computer of all time – a Macbook Air. So when my wife’s 3+ year old 17″ Dell notebook announced that it’s battery was no longer doing well and we had three blue screens in a week’s time – I knew we had to get her onto a new machine. We thought it would be either a 13″ or 15″ Macbook Pro, but she decided that spending twice as much for a Mac was too much. So I went in search of the best PC alternative. This Dell 1470 is pretty close in size and features to the 13″ Macbook Pro including claimed 6 hour battery life. And it largely lives up to its promise. It’s the fastest PC in the house and for the 4 we paid Amazon right before Christmas is turning out to be the bargain of the year. I did have to reformat the hard drive to get rid of multiple partitions so the Windows Easy Transfer program would work correctly, but that only served to conveniently getting rid of all of the unwanted junk that Dell feels compelled to load onto the hard disk. Positives: light weight – fast enough speed – abundant memory and hard disk space – and a cool red color. Also – the power supply is both smaller and lighter than past Dell models included, and it’s compatible with all of the old Dell power supplies we have around here. I would have given this machine 5 stars if it had a backlit keyboard which you can get on the Studio 15, but not on this model. Don’t forget the crappy hard drive partitioning which brings it down, AND I don’t know what Microsoft is thinking – you can’t back up to a network drive (I use a DROBO with Droboshare) without paying to upgrade Windows 7 to the Professional version. Also – if you configure a Dell Inspiron 14Z (same model, different name) comparably on the Dell website, you’ll be north of 0 so Amazon has the bargain here. Also – Best Buy stocks this machine so you can do like I did, and go test drive it for yourself before buying. Recommended! Good luck!

Review by J. Bolton:

This is a great laptop for the price. It functions beautifully for basic use (school, work, surfing the web, etc.). I have had absolutely no trouble with mine, and would highly recommend this product to everyday users.

I’ve seen a couple of bad reviews simply because users purchased this computer with the intent to make it their “gaming” computer, and then were disappointed with the outcome. Check the specs and your game requirements first. If you truly want a gaming computer, you probably shouldn’t be looking at Laptops in the first place.

It’s a great computer at a reasonable price. If you just need something for work, school, and surfing the web, it’s perfect.

Review by Blake Mason:

Okay, so how many laptops can you find with a 15.6″ screen, 1080p resolution, and a decent graphics chipset for under 00? Not many! This laptop met all three of these needs for me. It came with enough RAM that I don’t need to upgrade it until the 8GB of SODIMM modules become ridiculously cheap. The video chipset M96XT (AKA Radeon 4670) has pretty decent performance [...]. There are just way too many other laptops out there that have 1080p screens and an Intel GMA chipset, or low resolution 1280×800 screens with decent video chipsets. This laptop has both high resolution and a good chipset.

I recently took it to a LAN party to play Team Fortress 2 and it ran beautifully with all the settings turned up to high (60fps+). My last laptop died because the CFL backlight failed, with the LED backlight that should never be a problem. It’s also super bright. I usually have it set to a quarter of the brightness and it’s still pretty bright.

If you don’t like the disk I/O speed (I think it’s fine) you can always put a SSD in this as it’s a standard SATA disk drive. There are USB ports on the left AND one eSATA/USB on the right, so you can use either one.

My laptop actually did have a gigabit network adapter (not the 10/100 listed here) but no jumbo frames support :( Typical with Broadcom.

Oh, and Windows 7, 64bit is amazing. You have the full 4GB of system memory and 1GB of video.

Cons?:

No scroll lock button, no pause/break button. Not sure how if there is some hidden Fn shortcut to get these. But who uses these really? There’s no Fn num-pad, but really, I never used that. The wireless enable/disable switch is a capacitive touch button right above the keyboard. It’s easy to accidentally hit it and turn the wireless off and not realize it.

This item arrived Friday 6/12/09 and as soon as it arrived I tried it on my Inspiron 1505 and my son’s 1501 and it did not charge either. I contacted these people on Friday and got one response that said they would gladly exchange or fully refund the product, but they need more information to make sure it wasn’t a technical issue. I responded back and gave them all of the information they requested and here it is 2 days later and I have not gotten any response at all. At first I was willing to exchange, but now I don’t want to deal with people that take your money and leave you hanging. I needed to get this issue resolved as soon as possible as my son is leaving out of town and will need to take our only working adapter.

So please beware if you buy this product it may not work and they will take their time responding to you!!!

Dell Latitude D610 Notebook PC (Intel Pentium M 1.86GHz, Windows XP Professional, 512MB DDR2, 40GB HDD, DVD/CDRW Combo) Reviews

Review by Samadhi1138:

I couldn’t agree more with the other reviews regarding the deceptiveness of some outfits – in this case Tiger – in selling refurbished items as new. I felt that it was important, however, to review the product and not the vendor. I’ve used the D610 professionally with great success for several years. I was so pleased with its performance that I bought one for my personal use as well as two more for my in-laws. I bought all three as refurbs but I knew what I was getting and the price was unbeatable at approximately 0.00 each. If you’re a wannabe geek such as I am, you can easily find all of the service literature necessary to service the D610 yourself. I’ve never had to service any of the three that I bought, but I did expand the memory in all of them. I was pleased with how easy the upgrade was, how well engineered the product is, and how clear the service literature is as well. I bought a hard drive caddy and an additional 80GB HD to fit in the CD port, so now I have 2 bootable HDs and a ton of storage. If forced to search for a negative, the only thing I can come up with is the click action of the pointing device. The feel is a bit stiff and the sound is somewhat irritating. That said, if the pointing device ever became bothersome enough a USB mouse could be purchased for a couple of bucks. I was looking for another D610 to buy for my wife when I stumbled upon these reviews so I felt compelled to put in my two cents worth. Good luck with whatever product you choose!

I bought it to replace an

off-brand model I had that blew up.

I have been very happy with the purchase

though I do recommend getting it with

windows vista because xp is going to become

obsolete. (that’s why the xp version is

so much more affordable..)

The shipping was very fast and the product

was used, but looked like it was brand new!

(It came from a company)

Dell Inspiron Mini IM10-2863 10.1-Inch Obsidian Black Netbook Reviews

Review by D. Farley:

So far I’m very impressed with this system. The keyboard is just awesome for a netbook, and with Windows XP Home, it’s really not all that slow. I’ve had several heavier applications open at the same time and didn’t really have any problems. Aptana Studio (My web development IDE of choice), FireFox 3, TrueCrypt, XAMPP (Apache & MYSql) just to name a few. I’ve only got a few real complaints about this computer. One, the touchpad is horrible. It really shouldn’t have had the two buttons integrated into the bottom of it, it’s not possible to have your index finger navigating and thumb clicking at the same time. It’s quite annoying (I bought a cheap travel mouse). The other complaint I have is the video playback quality. It’s really just not that good. It’s actually quite choppy for the most part if you try watching videos in fullscreen. I have however found a workaround for this, and it makes the video quality look awesome (see notes at the bottom).

Pros:

Awesome 10″ display

Great almost full-size keyboard

3 USB ports (one of the left, two on the right)

2.6lbs, it’s super light

Decent speed for a 1.3Ghz system.

Cons:

Cruddy video playback (mostly full screen problems)

Horrible Linux video driver support (Intel GMA 500, google it)

Battery life is a little bit lacking compared to other netbooks.

Touchpad needs to be redesigned.

Video Playback Notes/Quality tweak:

As far as the cruddy video playback is concerned, the one thing that I have found to help with this is the usage of a third party media player. A friend of mine turned me on to a player called KMPlayer [...] which comes bundled with just about every video codec ever made, and not to mention that it’s portable (it runs off of a thumb drive). Anyway, you can customize the video rendering to allow for a much smoother playback of videos even on this slower model. Here’s what I do:

Right-Click in the main KMPlayer window

Click on “Video (Advanced)”

Click “Video Renderer” up near the top.

Down near the bottom select “Enhanced Video Renderer”.

Be amazed at how much better your videos look.

The playback quality that I received from doing this rivaled my full-size desktop with a real graphics card in it. This is definitely the most redeeming quality about this netbook because it really unlocks the ability for this to be a good portable media player. Cheers.

Dell Studio 1555 15.6-Inch Chainlink Black Laptop – Up to 8 Hours 3 Minutes of Battery Life (Windows 7 Home Premium) Reviews

Review by Wesley Davis:

I got one of these from Dell and have been immensely satisfied with it.

Pros:

- Truly gorgeous and bright screen.

- Laptop’s cheese-wedge-shaped design is great because there’s not a large “ledge”

- Good performance, comes with good video card and supports up to 8 GB RAM. I do a lot of 3D modeling and this has made my life so much easier compared to my old machine.

- Second headphone jack makes it perfect for watching DVDs with your buddy while you’re stuck in Afghanistan

- Windows 7 works like a champ and looks great

- Facial recognition software (FastAccess) makes login fast, easy, somewhat fun (not sure if Amazon config has this). May not work if the room lighting is weird.

- Attractive design, battery has fair life and doesn’t stick out like the badonkadonk my wife’s HP.

- Laptop speakers that don’t suck. Awesome. Also convenient, responsive media controls.

- Quiet keyboard. Not sure if this config has the backlit version, but if so you are in for a treat. Very nifty and useful in low light.

- Easy 1-door access panel on bottom for upgrade action

- SD/Media Card reader to get your camera photos, etc

Cons:

- Can get warm. Best used in combination with a Zalman ZM-NC2000 Notebook cooler. The cooler runs off USB (but you don’t lose a port because it has some on it), keeps the laptop from getting warm, and fits perfectly. I suggest the black one.

- Somewhat hefty. But hey, it’s a “desktop replacement” size.

- Only 3 USB ports

- No number pad functionality

All things considered I’m very pleased with my purchase and I can definitely recommend this model laptop for for someone who travels occasionally but not frequently.
